Or by a geneticist that it is in her genes. Or by a Freudian that she is maddened by penis envy. Any plan she might have of getting her life back under control is already scuttled.

To subvert the process we need to argue, not only that sadness is an appropriate reaction to afflicting circumstances, but that sadness is part of who women are and how they react to things. Women can bear pain better than men; that we can live with pain without indulging in orgies of self-pity and resentment is one of our strengths. In a poisoned world that becomes crueller and more unjust every day, sorrow may be dignified and rational. If the women of the tyrant nations do not grieve for the crimes of those nations, who will? We cannot enjoy the right to happiness until we have liberated sorrow; we cannot love the world until and unless we are conscious of losing it.

you say to me “i make you happy.” you know you make me sad. you know that although my smile reaches from ear to ear, you make me sad. you know that although you make me fall on the floor i'm laughing so hard you make me sad. you know that because, no matter what my face is doing, what noise i am making, what i am saying, my eyes are sad. my eyes are filled with tears, that i may be smiling or laughing or talking, but at the same time i am crying, and you know you are the reason why.
